I have a philosophy that, when faced with a course that teaches a technology, one should learn both the 'approved' technology, and another related technology. This is how I learned R. In grad school, I took a statistics course that taught us SPSS.

I did all the exercises in both R and SPSS. It took me twice as long, but I killed in the class.

By the end of the class, I was doing the analyses in R, and just going through the motions in SPSS. For about double the effort, I got three times the learning, because I was forced to really understand the underlying concepts that were being taught.
