Mumbai, Maharashtra: Small screen actor Arun Govil, best known for his role as Lord Rama in the popular TV serial 'Ramayan' of yesteryears, is all set to join the BJP, according to sources. A senior BJP leader told PTI, 'It is only a matter of time when he joins the party, but it will be definitely before the Bihar or UP elections.' Though the BJP central leadership is yet to take a final call on his induction, Mr Govil has already expressed his wish to work for a political party which follows the agenda of harmonious development. He is currently working on a programme for government's agriculture TV channel, DD Kisan. Mr Govil said, 'Yes, I want to join the BJP and would do so if I get an offer.' Hailing from Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh, the actor had declined invitations from all the parties including Congress and BJP in the past.
'Truly speaking, apart from coming closer to BJP, my contract with DD Kisan channel has brought me nearer to farmers also,' said Mr Govil. The 57-year-old will become the second prominent actor after Gajendra Chauhan, who played the role of Yudhishthir in 'Mahabharat', to join the BJP. The appointment of Mr Chauhan as the chairman of Film and Television Institute of India's governing council has led to protests from students for the past two months. Several alumni and film personalities have backed the students, as they feel that his stature falls far short of the standards of the famous institute. Earlier, Roopa Ganguly of 'Draupadi' fame and Praveen Kumar who played the role of 'Bheem' in Mahabharat have also joined the BJP.
